Big Burgers - Not so Friendly
Recently Friendly’s Restaurants started offering their biggest sandwich yet – the Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt. It’s a hamburger in between two grilled cheese sandwiches. At a whopping 1500 calories and 97 grams of fat (according to the Friendly’s website) this sandwich (or is it a burger?) has the same amount of calories that a lot of people should eat in an entire day.

Friendly’s is not the only restaurant to be serving up hugely high fat selections (KFC has the “DoubleDown” (pictured above), Wendy’s has the “Baconator Triple,” and McDonald’s has a whole host of sandwiches well over 500-600 calories each. At a time when 2 out of every 3 Americans are either overweight or obese, are these the kinds of "new" sandwiches we need?

Of course it's true that people don't have to buy this stuff. But restaurant chains invent these health-busting items and then advertise them to make them look appealing and like it's normal to eat this much. Meanwhile, we keep getting more overweight, our children keep getting more overweight, and health care costs keep rising. How can we change this?

DASH for Health Director Tom Moore, MD says individuals need to take responsibility and not buy this stuff, but companies that make our food should accept responsibility too. Food companies say, "We sell it because people buy it" and "We have healthy items on the menu too." "And here's my favorite corporate quote," says Tom. "We have a responsibility to our shareholders to create a profitable company." Maybe it's time to send a message that selling unhealthy products is bad for business. If you feel strongly enough about this to take a stand, how about:
1. Don’t buy this stuff!
2. Don’t go to the places that sell this stuff!
3. Tell the folks who work in the restaurants that you won't be back till they get serious about helping America get its health back.
4. Send the company an email, letting them know their menu items are excessive.
